What is Hypnosis?

You can improve your life and create the happiness you seek. However the answer does not lay in the external quests that society lures us with. The simple truth, said by so many and in so many different ways, is to “BE TRUE TO YOURSELF”. I found myself questioning time and time again “But how do you actually do this?” This inquiry led me to the world of hypnotism.

Hypnosis is a state of being that anyone can enter naturally. A hypnotist simply helps you to achieve this natural state more easily and effectively by providing you instructions on how to get into this trance like state. While in a hypnotic state, the hypnotist provides you suggestions that help you to achieve your goals, or enhance your own natural restorative and coping abilities.

Hypnosis is not a surrendering of your will, or a loss of consciousness. Hypnosis is a state of focused concentration in which you allow yourself to become highly responsive to suggestions. Daydreaming, fantasizing and driving on autopilot are all light states of hypnosis. In hypnosis you have complete control.

How does Hypnosis work?

In the hypnotic state, you access your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind controls our reality, so hypnosis helps to allow you to modify beliefs or behaviors to make changes or achieve goals. In our day to day experiences we are more aware of our conscious minds. The part of our mind that allows us to be aware of things, analyze and make judgments about right or wrong. However there is another part of our mind; the subconscious or unconscious that is the database for all of our experiences. This other part is responsible for our learning, interactions with our surrounding and the automatic functions of our body. Hypnosis is a way of focusing and communicating with this subconscious part of our mind.

Hypnosis can be used in different ways. You can access the subconscious mind through hypnosis and direct it to think and feel in a way that will work towards a given goal. You can also, go back into your memory (regress) and change a certain emotion or belief. In this context, regression therapy or past belief therapy is a self-help technique that reviews significant or remarkable events, by the client, with the hypnotist serving as a guide.

Who Would Benefit from Hypnosis?

Anyone can benefit from hypnotism. As this is a natural process, anyone can be hypnotized if they are open to it. Without realizing it, you go into hypnotic states throughout the day, including when you are entranced in a good book or movie or driving on autopilot. Basically your mind is focused and although you are awake, you are not really paying attention to anything going on around you.

As long as you do not have a medical condition (depression or anxiety for example) that needs to be treated by a therapist, you can benefit from hypnosis. Many people use the terms depressed or anxiety to describe how they are feeling. This is different than having a medical diagnosis of depression or anxiety. If you are unsure, speak to your medical doctor.
